Sir Robert Chiltern is a successful Government minister, well-off and with a loving wife. All this is threatened when Mrs Cheveley appears in London with damning evidence of a past misdeed. Sir Robert turns for help to his friend Lord Goring, an apparently idle philanderer and the despair of his father. Goring knows the lady of old, and, for him, takes the whole thing pretty seriously.

一九四二年，新四军第五师第十四旅主力南渡长江，建立了以大幕山为中心的鄂南抗日根据地。一九四五年八月初，香木镇维持会长冯远山的儿子冯立与徐天明的女儿徐灵珊大婚当日，日军踢死了一个中国孩子，徐天明出头掌掴日本人，村正小队长露出多年来隐藏在平静表象下的獠牙，他要徐天明第二日去据点挨日本人三枪，以换全镇人的平安。为了挽救全镇人的性命， 徐天明带着灵珊突围前往鄂东南的大幕山革命根据地找新四军求援。在配合廖芸香的一次次指挥中，徐天明不由自主的喜欢上了她。当村正以全镇的性命来威胁徐天明时，廖芸香挺生而出以一人之命换取全镇人的平安。在最后的危机关头，大幕山根据地新四军赶到香木镇，擂响了镇牌坊口的大鼓，带着全镇老百姓冲向日本人据点，赢得了全镇八年抗战以来扬眉吐气的胜利。
